OPEN VS CLOSED TECHNOLOGY

What is open and closed technology?

Closed source technology is uncustomisable, tethered to the creators desires and controlled for a focused and consistent user experience. Eric Raymond expands on this by stating that only a selected few see the production and development loops in private. Allowing complete control over the content and users.

In contrast open source technology is customisable, flexible, innovative, enables multiple entry points through production and thrives on user engagement. Being publicly available allows feedback and correction for any produser contributing to the project.

Example:

APPLE vs. ANDROID.

Android is an open source software stack for a wide range of mobile devices allowing customisation and porting.

Apple is closed, restricts customisation through company gatekeepers. This allows apple to control the distribution of content on their platform.

  1. Hi there! I really loved how you explained closed and open source technology and then related it to your remediation! Providing examples for both really helped get the message across.
I think, to add to your statements, you could have talked about how open source technology is slowly becoming more desirable. I’d say this is because it’s obviously more flexible but also because it’s more affordable.I found this article which talks about popular open source technologies -> http://www.veriday.com/blog/6-open-source-technologies-changed-world/
